Katarzyna Piter and Dalma Galfi were one step away from another upset at the 2023 Roland Garros Grand Slam. The Polish-Hungarian couple were just two points away from happiness.
The pair of Katarzyna Piter and Dalma Galfi arrived in the reserve list doubles group and surprised in the first round, as they won with the duo of Alexa Guarachi and Erin Routliffe. In the second round, Gabriela Dabrowski and Luisa Stefani got in the way of the Pole and the Hungarian. The more experienced Canadian and Brazilian turned the tide in the third set and eventually won 4:6, 6:2, 7:5.
The match was tense from the first to the last ball. Piter and Galfi got off to a great start, leading 3-0 after two breaks. Opponents gave chase and quickly caught a break. After that, they continued to press returns to equalize. But the Poznań tennis player and her partner did not let the set be ripped off. They defended several break points and in the 10th game they closed the first part of the game.
Dabrowski and Stefani responded in the second installment. The Canadian and the Brazilian improved their own serve. Not once did they have to defend against a loss of serve and landed two shots on the return. They first tried to break in the fourth game. They then took a break in the eighth game to complete the set.

However, Dabrowski and Stefani won a second break, after which they took the lead 6:5. After switching sides, Piter and Galfi missed two tie-break chances before losing the entire game.
After two hours and 11 minutes, the pair of Dabrowski and Stefani, seeded with the eighth number, savored the victory. Their opponents in the 1/8 finals will be marked “10” from the Canadian Leylah Fernandez and the American Taylor Townsend.
Piter, 32, will not play in the 1/8 finals of the Grand Slam doubles for the first time. She finished the fight on the courts of Roland Garros in the second round. She had already obtained this result in Melbourne, Paris and New York during the 2014 season.
