Talents Holger Rune, who lost to Marcos Giron, and Sebastian Korda were eliminated in the second round of the ATP Masters 1000 hardcourt tournament in Toronto. Jannik Sinner and the experienced Andy Murray advanced.
Holger Rune was the last to participate in the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Toronto. The fifth-seeded Dane had a first-round bye and his round of 16 match against Marcos Giron was due to end on Wednesday night. The 20-year-old’s debut game against Gentofte unexpectedly turned out to be his last. Rune committed up to 50 unforced errors and lost to the USA qualifier 2-6, 6-4, 3-6.
In beating world number six Rune, 30-year-old Giron picked up the biggest victory of his career. In the third round, the American will face his compatriot, Tommy Paul, in the “12” tournament. The 26-year-old from New Jersey was better than Francisco Cerundolo in three games.
Another young contender, Sebastian Korda, also dropped out. The 23-year-old American was broken twice and lost to Aleksandar Vukic after a decisive tie-break. The next rival of the Australian, “lucky loser” from the qualifying rounds, will be Gaël Monfils.
Jannik Sinner probably did his job. Marked with a ‘seven’, the Italian recorded ten aces, 22 knockouts and two breaks and won 6-4, 6-3 over more experienced compatriot Matteo Berrettini in an hour and a half.
In the 1/8 finals, the 21-year-old Sinner will face veteran Andy Murray. The 36-year-old Briton once again showed great ambition in his career and after nearly three hours of fighting, he beat qualifier Max Purcell 7-6(2), 3-6, 7-5, despite a 2-4 defeat in the deciding set.
