The plane was shot down “by mistake”, according to Iranian forces.

A court sentenced ten Iranian soldiers to prison terms for their involvement in the crash of a Ukrainian airliner near Tehran in January 2020.

One officer was sentenced to ten years in prison while nine other soldiers were sentenced to between one and three years in prison, according to the official Mizan news agency.

On January 8, 2020, Ukraine International Airlines flight PS752 took off from Tehran. Shortly afterwards, it was shot down and all 176 people on board were killed. Iranian forces admitted shortly after shooting down the plane “by mistake.”

The level of tension between Iran and the United States was extremely high at the time, and Iranian air defense forces were on alert after Iran fired missiles at U.S. military installations in Iraq.

Most of the people on the plane were Iranians and Canadians, many of whom had dual citizenship. However, Ukraine also lost eleven citizens, as well as 17 people with Swedish citizenship or residence permits.
