The Canadian team surprised everyone by beating Iran 3-0 (25:16, 25:20, 25:22) in the first leg of the third round of the Tokyo Olympics. Theoretically, such a decision makes it easier for us to get first place in the group.
Canada played under pressure
The Games did not start well for us. In the first match, after a fierce battle, we lost 3-2 after the tie-break with Iran. The first victory is always important, and as reigning world champions, we couldn’t afford more of these misadventures. In the second round, we beat Italy 3-0 (25:20, 26:24, 25:20), but Iran still had everything in their hands after the 3-0 win over Venezuela.
Canada lost the first two games. With Italy after the tie-break and with Japan 3:1. Such results put them against the wall and the Canadian representatives managed the situation perfectly. Thanks to this result, we no longer have to look for a rival.
There’s a chance for first place
We have matches with Venezuela (28.07), Japan (30.07) and Canada (01.08) ahead of us. If we win all these games by three points, either 3:0 or 3:1, we will take first place in the group.
The fight for the top of Group A will allow our volleyball players to knock the theoretically weakest rival of Group B from fourth place. However, if we were to take second or third place, we would know our rival by coin toss. It was decided on such a solution so that the teams would not try to find a weaker rival.
In Group B, the United States leads with six points and the Russian Olympic Committee is second with the same number of points. Brazil are third with five points. Then France, Argentina and Tunisia.
