Maryna Gąsienica-Daniel hasn’t had the best streak in giant slalom lately. Last Tuesday in Semmering, Austria, she made a mistake that forced her to finish the competition at the first checkpoint, while on December 10, in Sestriere, Italy, she was unable to finish due to ‘a fall.
Maryna Gąsienica-Daniel took sixth place in Wednesday’s giant at Semmering
On Wednesday, Gąsienica-Daniel returned to Semmering, hoping this time to reach the end of the course. In the first run, she managed to do it, although she may have been hampered by driving over a bump. Eventually, with a time of 1:00.83, she finished in eighth place.
The Polish loses 1.6 seconds against the Swiss leader Laura Gut-Behrami. Second place went to American Mikaela Shiffrin with a time of 59.45, third to Italian Marta Bassino with a time of 1:00.04.
Thus, Gąsienica-Daniel has a chance to improve on the best result this season. For the moment, it is the eighth place that she wins at the American competition of Killington. On Wednesday in Semmering, Poland’s second representative, Magdalena Łuczak, also started, but she did not qualify for the second round.
In the second run, Maryna Gąsienica-Daniel set the third best time of the whole group. She reached the finish line in 1:03.60. Only Grenier Valérie finished the race faster (Canada; 1:03.18) and Paul’s Moltzan (UNITED STATES; 1:03.22). Gąsienica finished the second run 0.46 seconds faster than the winner of the entire competition, American Mikaela Shiffrin. However, due to errors in the first run, she missed the podium by 45 hundredths. In the end, the Pole’s total time over the two runs was 2:04.43, which earned her sixth place. Shiffrin won with a time of 2:03.51, or 0.10 sec. passed Gut-Behrami, and by 0.47 sec. Basin.

With sixth place in Wednesday’s competition, Gąsienica-Daniel took her World Cup achievements to 72 points and moved up to 40th overall. Shiffrin remains the cycle leader with 775 points, second-placed Sofia Goggia has 470 points and third-placed Petra Vlahova 456 points.
