The 15th edition of the WTA tournament has started in Monterrey. There was a surprise on the first day. Marie Bouzkova (WTA 30) lost 4:6, 2:6 to Anna Karolina Schmiedlova (WTA 100). In less than an hour and 44 minutes, the Czech, quarter-finalist of Wimbledon 2022, used only two of seven break points. The Slovak transformed five out of 10 chances into a break.

Schmiedlova was ranked 26th in the standings in the past, but she hasn’t been doing well for a long time. He has three WTA Tour titles to his credit. She won one in 2015 in Katowice. She reached her last final four years ago in Hobart.

The Slovak’s next rival will be Caroline Dolehide (WTA 206), who beat Jule Niemeier (WTA 69) 6-1, 6-0 in 51 minutes. The German quarter-finalist at Wimbledon last year committed six double faults and missed three break points. The American used six out of 10 chances to break. She scored 53 points out of 80 played (66.3%).

Lin Zhu (WTA 41) won 6-4, 7-6(4) over Anna Bondar (WTA 76). In the second set, the Chinese came back with 0:2. Ysaline Bonaventure (WTA 96) defeated Despina Papamichail (WTA 150) 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-2. The Belgian led 7-6, 4-1, but lost five games in a row. At the start of the third set, there was no shortage of hard fights for every point. Later, Bonaventure took control of the situation and crushed the resistance of the Greek woman.
