Polish tennis players have had another week of ITF World Tennis Tour competition behind them. They fought for ranking points in different parts of the world. How did the Whites and Reds behave?
Weronika Falkowska played in the Slovenian town of Murska Sobota. In an indoor event with a prize pool of 40 thousand. She beat Slovenian Nina Potocnik in the first round, but Andreea Mitu was more effective in the 1/8 finals. The Romanian won 6:4, 6:3. Then the Pole, together with the Greek Valentini Grammatikopoulou, reached the semi-finals in doubles.
The first victory of the 2023 season was won by Weronika Ewald this week. The 17-year-old made her second appearance for Monastir in Tunisia, but this time she beat China’s Jiaqi Wang 6-3, 6-2 for the inaugural. In the next phase, however, the Belgian Clara Vlasselaer proved to be much better (6:3, 6:0). Three Polish women took part in the qualifications here without success: Justyna Jodłowska, Maja Bajorek and Martyna Zaremba.
In the Egyptian of Sharm el-Sheikh, Gina Feistel created the surprise in the first round. The 20-year-old beat top-seeded Russian Ekaterina Kazionova 6-4, 7-6(5). However, she did not follow the blow and had to recognize the superiority of the German Lara Schmidt (6:0, 6:4) in the 1/8 final. Another of the White-Reds, Magdalena Świerczyńska, arrived in the main group as the “lucky loser” of elimination. In the first round on a tennis “bicycle” she was fired by American Anna Ulyashchenko. Alicja Formella was eliminated in qualifying. Then, with Świerczyńska, she reached the quarter-finals of the doubles, as did Feistel and her Romanian partner Briana Szabo.

Our ladies also played this week in Turkish Antalya. The single failed to achieve a notable result. Ada Piestrzyńska and Xenia Bandurowska were eliminated in the second elimination round, and Zuzanna Frankowska in the first. In doubles, only Bandurowska came forward, who along with Denise Hrdinkova of the Czech Republic reached the semifinals. At this stage, the best seed with “two” the Swedish Jacqueline Cabaj Awad and the Greek Martha Matoula.
As for our men, in the Slovak Trnava, Szymon Kielan and Mikołaj Lis showed up in the main draw. Both were eliminated in the first round, and the other Pole had to recognize the superiority of the talented Czech Jakub Mensik. Piotr Kusiewicz failed in the qualifying round, then together with Lis competed unsuccessfully in the doubles. Kielan and David Pichler reached the doubles final. In Saturday’s title match, the Pole and the Austrian lost after a super tie-break to Czech duo Jiri Barnat and Filip Duda 6-1, 3-6, 7-10.
Paweł Ciaś spent another week in Sharm el-Sheikh. This time, the 29-year-old finished the fight a notch lower, at the second-round stage, and his killer turned out to be the Italian Gabriele Bosio (6:3, 6:2). Then Ciaś and Ukraine’s Volodymyr Użylovski reached the quarter-finals in doubles. Alan Bojarski performed unsuccessfully in the singles qualifier.
Michał Mikuła qualified in Monastir. In the first round of the main ladder, he won with the German Philip Florig 4:6, 6:3, 6:2. At the 1/8 stage, China’s Xiaofei Wang proved to be better than the Pole, who won 4:6, 6:2, 6:4.
