On Saturday, the qualification competition for the final tournament of the Billie Jean King Cup 2023 ended. As usual, the emotions were not lacking, even if the favorites did not have major problems to win.
This weekend, nine games were contested for a place in the final tournament of the Billie Jean King Cup 2023. The most decisive victory was won by the Americans, who gave the Austrians no chance in Delray Beach. After the first day it was 2-0 for the hosts. On Saturday, Jessica Pegula sealed the win by defeating Julia Grabher 6-1, 6-3. Coco Gauff and Catherine McNally made it 4-0 in doubles.
The Spanish team also passed qualifying and the third point was won by Nuria Parrizas Diaz, who beat the Mexican Marcela Zacarias 6: 3, 6: 0. In Coventry there was no great comeback from the British women. Harriet Dart bravely competed against Caroline Garcia, but it was the Frenchwoman who prevailed 6:1, 6:7(10), 6:1 and secured victory for the Habs after the third single.
In Antalya, Turkey, Marta Kostiuk created a surprise by reversing the course of the duel with Barbora Krejcikova. The Ukrainian beat the 2021 Roland Garros champion 3:6, 6:1, 6:4, but it was only an honorable point for the representation of our eastern neighbors. Katarina Zawacka did not follow her friend’s lead and lost to Marketa Vondrousova 3:6, 4:6. Thus, the titled Czechs won the whole game 3-1 and will play the final tournament.

In Stuttgart, after the first day of the match between Germany and Brazil, there was a draw and then captain Rainer Schuettler decided to make substitutions. Introduced Jule Niemeier found his way to leader of his rivals Beatriz Haddad Maia and won 7-6 (3), 3-6, 6-2. Promotion to our western neighbors was sealed by Anna-Lena Friedsam, beating Laura Pigossi 6:1, 6:0.
The Slovaks returned to the game on Saturday, after the first day of the match with the Italians in Bratislava, they lost 0-2. Anna Karolina Schmiedlova defeated Jasmine Paolini 6:1, 4:6, 6:4, and Viktoria Hruncakova tied the game, winning with Elisabetta Cocciaretto 6:3, 7:6(2). Given the above, it was decided to double, in which Elisabetta Cocciaretto and Martina Trevisan won the promotion point. The Italians beat Viktoria Hruncakova and Tereza Mihalikova 6:4, 4:6, 7:5.
The doubles also proved crucial in the match between Canada and Belgium. Leylah Fernandez gave the hosts a 2-1 lead after a hard-fought 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 win over Ysaline Bonaventure. Then the captains decided to make changes. Greet Minnen eventually won against Katherine Sebov 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 and after the singles it was a 2-2 draw. Fernandez appeared for the third time on the court at the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver, which, in tandem with Gabriela Dabrowski, confidently defeated the duo of Kirsten Flipkens and Greet Minnen 6: 1, 6: 2.
The Slovenia-Romania match, which is being played on clay in Koper, has yet to be completed. After matchday one, the hosts were down 0-2, but Tamara Zidansek and Kaja Juvan won their Saturday singles and leveled the match. The decisive double was interrupted at 3 in the first and will end on Sunday. Juvan and Zidansek take on Irina Bara and Monika Niculescu.
Thus, Spain, Czech Republic, France, Canada, USA, Italy, Germany and Kazakhstan (who beat Poland 3-1 in Astana) qualified for the final tournament of the 2023 Billie Jean King Cup. They joined last year’s final entrants – teams from Australia and Switzerland. The 12-team field will be rounded out by the host for November’s event, which is expected to be announced soon.
