In March, Nikita Mazepin triumphed as he won the case at the CJEU and led to the temporary suspension of EU sanctions. This allowed the Russian to believe in a return to F1. The European Union’s response was immediate.
Nikita Mazepin is suing the European Union after being placed under economic sanctions following the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. They restricted his ability to enter and work in the EU, which the 24-year-old claims deprived him of a chance to compete in Formula 1.
The Moscow driver tried to prove before the CJEU that his father Dmitry Mazepin’s links with Vladimir Putin could not justify imposing sanctions on him. The EU court accepted these arguments, although it should also be added that the Russian lawyers distorted certain facts. The effect, however, was that the sanctions against the former Haas driver were temporarily suspended.
“I really hope to have the opportunity to return to the big sport, preferably F1. But at the moment it is quite difficult. I am working on my charitable foundation. I work with a lot of people. If the opportunity arises present, if the sanctions are lifted, then I am ready,” Mazepin told the Russian “Championate”.

The former F1 driver also revealed that his joy at winning the CJEU did not last long, as only days later he received reports that the European Union was covering him with new sanctions, amending slightly their legal basis. “I have a lot of lawyers working to give me the opportunity to return to the sport. However, I have no success to report at the moment,” added Mazepin.
– We won the case before the CJEU on March 2 and on March 10, new sanctions against me were introduced. So it turns out that I have to sue the European Union again and fight in court.
In the near future, Mazepin will spend a lot of time in court. The United States and Canada have also imposed sanctions. Last week it emerged the 24-year-old had sued Canadian authoritiesto whom he asks for the immediate delisting of the sanctions list.
In the lawsuit, the Russian claimed that the sanctions imposed on him “damaged his career”. He therefore calls for the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mélanie Joly, to be removed from the sanctions list. In his closing argument, Mazepin also said the Canadian ban “catastrophically reduces” his chances of returning to F1.
Mazepin demanded that a Canadian court lift the sanctions “as a matter of urgency”. The Russian stressed that negotiations regarding F1 start in the spring and summer of 2024, so he must be removed from the sanctions list as soon as possible.
