A giant surprise in Madrid! Kazakh Jelena Rybakina has bid farewell to the WTA 1000 tournament, having had several strong starts to the biggest events this year. On Friday, she lost to Anna Kalinska.
Jelena Rybakina (WTA 7) did a great job this year at the Australian Open and in two WTA 1000 tournaments. She reached the final in Melbourne, as well as in Miami. In Indian Wells, she triumphed. In Madrid, the 2022 Wimbledon champion was knocked out in the second round. She lost 5:7, 6:4, 2:6 against Anna Kalinska (WTA 62).
In the first set there was only one break, which Kalinska got at 6:5. In the second set, Rybakina was down 2-3 after serving, but won four of the next five matches. However, Kazaszka didn’t turn the tide of the entire encounter. She lost her serve twice in the third set. In the eighth game, she defended two match points and got two break points, but failed to break the opponent. Kalinska earned the promotion in the third matchball.
In the encounter which lasted two hours and 13 minutes, Rybakina served 10 aces, including six in the opening set. She only used two of 12 break points. Kalinska converted four out of nine chances to break. It was the second match for these tennis players this year. In Miami, Kazaszka won after a three hundred battle. On Friday, Kalinska picked up her third career victory against a Top 10 tennis player. In previous seasons, she beat Sloane Stephens (US Open 2019) and Karolina Pliskova (Miami 2022).
