Juan Pablo Varillas took three sets and over three hours to defeat Albert Ramos in the first round of the ATP 250 tournament on clay in Lyon. Two representatives of the hosts – Corentin Moutet and Alexandre Muller – have been eliminated.

Very long matches are typical of the clay court season. However, the first round match of the ATP Lyon tournament between Juan Pablo Varillas and Albert Ramos was in the marathon category. After three hours and 11 minutes of fierce competition, the Peruvian won 3:6, 7:6(7), 6:4.

Varillas brilliantly endured a nervous end to the second set when he was two points away from defeat. In turn, he won three final games in the third. With this, he earned the opportunity to play in the second round with fourth seed Francisco Cerundolo.

Marked with the “three”, Tommy Paul will face Grégoire Barrère in his inaugural match. The 29-year-old player from the French shock in an hour and a half had to deal with Corentin Moutet.

The hosts’ second representative, Alexandre Muller, was also eliminated. The 26-year-old Poissy was broken three times and lost 2-6, 3-6 to Jack Draper, who for a change didn’t have to defend a single break point.

The final games of the qualifying round also took place on Sunday. Alvaro Lopez, Pablo Llamas, Zhizhen Zhang and Lloyd Harris qualified for the main support.
