On Monday, the ATP ranking was released, which takes into account the results obtained by tennis players during the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Rome. There have been major changes at the top of the list. What is the situation of the Whites and the Reds?

The last two weeks have not been fruitful for Hubert Hurkacz. The Polish tennis player has already lost in the second round of the Italian International Championship to American Jeffrey John Wolf and has not improved his score. Despite this, the Wrocław native moved up the ATP rankings on Monday.

“Hubi” rose from 15th to 13th position. This happened because Briton Cameron Norrie and Spaniard Rafael Nadal, who did not start at Foro Italico, crashed. From the “13”, our representative should be seeded for the Grand Slam Roland Garros 2023, which will start on Sunday, May 28.

There have been significant changes in the world elite. Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz regained the ATP lead after winning just one match in Rome, dethroning Novak Djokovic. The Serb dropped from first to third position, as the vice-leader was Danil Medvedev. The Russian triumphed in this year’s edition of the Italian International Championship (more here). Dane Holger Rune, beaten by him in Sunday’s final, improved his personal best, as he overtook Russian Andrei Rublev and moved up to sixth place.

Hurkacz is currently the only Pole listed in the Top 200 singles rankings. Kamil Majchrzak (ATP 203) abandoned this group on Monday, which cannot play on professional courts due to doping suspicions. Our country’s third racket was Daniel Michalski (ATP 265), who advanced 24 places. Kacper Żuk (ATP 270) only gained four positions. Maks Kaśnikowski, who is currently the 316th tennis player in the world, can boast of a new personal best and will want to break into the Top 300 in the near future.

Jan Zieliński and Hugo Nys won the doubles tournament in Rome and thus became the best couple of the 2023 season (more here). Individually, the Pole is the world’s 12th doubles player, and his Monegasque partner is 14th. Dutchman Wesley Koolhof and Britain’s Neal Skupski remain at the top of the doubles standings.

This week, the ATP 250 competitions will be played in Geneva and Lyon, the last tournaments before Roland Garros 2023. In France, Daniel Michalski competed unsuccessfully in the qualifying rounds (more here).
