Linette, despite the placement, was unlucky in the draw. From the start, we knew that a difficult match awaited her with Fernandez, 20, because she already has valuable results. In 2021, she had reached the final of the US Open, and a year ago in Paris she had stopped in the quarter-finals.
Linette started the match well and after several minutes led 3:1. From then on, however, Fernandez dominated the field. She won the next five matches and the first set fell to her.
The Pole decided to take a break. It had a good effect, because she returned to a good game. She started the second set with a 3:0 lead, but this time she didn’t let her rival make up for the losses and tied the result.
In the deciding set, Linette lost a break point in games three and seven. Fernandez got off the hook and called the shot. In the eighth game, she got a break, which proved to be crucial for the fate of the match. A few minutes later, using the second match ball, the Canadian closed the match.
Earlier on Sunday, Magdalena Fręch advanced to the second round, beating 29th seed Shuai Zhang 6:1, 6:1.
On Tuesday, Iga Świątek, defending champion and world ranking leader, will join the competition. Her rival will be the Spaniard Cristina Bucsa.
Result of the match of the 1st round in singles:
Leylah Fernandez (Canada) v Magda Linette (Poland, 21) 6:3, 1:6, 6:3
