There is the first big surprise in the WTA 1000 tournament in Montreal. France’s Caroline Garcia, seeded fifth, was eliminated after losing to Czech Marie Bouzkova.

Caroline Garcia (WTA 6) is not doing well on the professional courts this year. His best results were the finals in Lyon and Monterrey. She has lost to tennis players outside of the Top 50 rankings, including Alycia Parks, Sorana Cirstea, (twice), Mayar Sherif, Camila Osorio and Anna Blinkowa. She was eliminated from Roland Garros in the second round and from Wimbledon in the third round.

In London, Marie Bouzkova (WTA 37) became the Frenchwoman’s killer. In Montreal, there was another confrontation between these tennis players. The Czech was even better, winning 6:4, 4:6, 6:2. Garcia led 4-2 in the first set before losing four straight. In the second, it went from 1:3. She led in Game 3, but she was powerless there. She won the only games when she went from 0:5 to 2:5.

The match lasted two hours and 14 minutes. Bouzkova scored 40 of 56 on her first serve. She converted six of 16 break points. Garcia converted four of eight break opportunities. The Czech brought the record of meetings with the Frenchman to 4-0. Bouzkova earned her eighth victory over a Top 10 player.

There was no clash of Grand Slam champions. Wiktoria Azarenka (WTA 19) withdrew and Sloane Stephens (WTA 38) qualified for the third round without playing. Jelena Rybakina’s (WTA 4) match with Jennifer Brady (WTA 584) was abandoned in the first set tie-break due to rain. The 2022 Wimbledon champion from Kazakhstan and US 2021 Australian Open runner-up, returning from health issues, will return to competition on Wednesday.

In the first round, Marketa Vondrousova (WTA 10) defeated Mayar Sherif (WTA 33) 6:4, 6:2. The Czech 0:2 won 12 of 14 consecutive matches. In 78 minutes, she scored 16 points out of 20 on the opponent’s second serve. She converted five of her 11 break points. The Wimbledon champion will be another rival for Karolina Woźniacka, who is back after a three-year absence.

Home fans were disappointed by Bianca Andreescu (WTA 41), who lost 3:6, 2:6 to Camila Giorgi (WTA 51). In 91 minutes, the 2019 US Open Canadian champion didn’t get a break despite five chances. Andreescu triumphed in 2019 in Toronto, where the women’s tournament takes place in odd years. The Italian used three of the eight break points. In the second round, she will face Petra Kvitova, who won the title in Montreal in 2012. Giorgi was the best in this tournament two years ago.
