The ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Cincinnati, which ended on Sunday, was expected to bring changes to the world’s top. Novak Djokovic almost had Carlos Alcaraz. Good news also for Hubert Hurkacz.
Sunday’s final of the Western & Southern Open 2023 will be remembered for years to come. Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz fought a duel of nearly four hours. The Serb defended the match ball and beat the Spaniard 5:7, 7:6(7), 7:6(4).
Thanks to the victory in Cincinnati, “Nole” scored 1,000 points and got much closer to “Carlitos” in the world rankings. Currently, the two tennis players are only separated by… 20 points. It is almost certain that Djokovic will return to the top spot after the US Open 2023, where Alcaraz will defend his title. To do that, the Serb will only need to win one fight in New York.
Russian Danil Medvedev, third in the ATP rankings, is already more than 3,500 points behind the first two. On Monday, Denmark’s Holger Rune moved up to a career-high fourth place. Additionally, Norwegian Casper Ruud returned to the Top 5, as Stefanos Tsitsipas dropped out of this group. The Greek lost in the third round to Hubert Hurkacz and lost the lion’s share of points in last year’s final in Cincinnati. He is seventh in the latest list.

As for Hurkacz, he has reason to be happy. Thanks to 360 points for the semi-final of the Cincinnati tournament, the 26-year-old from Wrocław moved from 20th to 17th position. So the Pole took the opportunity to improve. He will have his next opportunity next week when the 2023 US Open begins.
The second of the White-Reds, Kamil Majchrzak, fell to 239th place on Monday. A slight improvement was made by Daniel Michalski, who is currently 266 years old. The Poles, who reached the quarter-finals of the Lotto Kozerki Open challenger, have progressed. Kacper Żuk is the 311th tennis player in the world and Maks Kaśnikowski is the 314th.
This week will be the final event leading up to the 2023 US Open Grand Slam. The men will fight for points and cash prizes in Winston-Salem, where the ATP 250 tournament will be played. Jan Zieliński and his Monaco partner Hugo Nys will present themselves in duplicate (more here).
