Karolina Woźniacka returned to professional tennis with great style. In Montreal (WTA 1000), the former leader of the ranking beat the Australian Kimberly Birrell.
Karolina Wozniacka claimed her only Grand Slam triumph at the 2020 Australian Open. She played her last match in Melbourne of 2020. In the third round, she lost to Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur after a three-set battle. After more than three years of absence, the former leader of the ranking returns to professional tennis. Thanks to the wildcard, he enters the Montreal tournament. At the start, the Dane beat Kimberly Birrell (WTA 115) 6:2, 6:2.
Woźniacka started the game by returning a pass. She won six of her next seven matches. In the second set there were many hard fights for the advantage, but in the key moments Dunka played excellent tennis. The former 2:2 leader won four games and entered the second round.
In 97 minutes, Birrell committed 10 double faults and Wozniacki committed five. The Danes defended six of eight break points and used six of 12 break chances.
The Danish tennis player was the leader of the rankings for a total of 71 weeks, including late 2010 and 2011. During her career, she won 30 singles titles on the WTA Tour. The last she won in Beijing in 2018. One of the Dane’s triumphs was in Montreal (2010).
Another rival of Woźniacka will be the Czech Marketa Vondrousova or the Egyptian Mayar Sherif.
