The WTA 1000 hard court competition in Guadalajara began on Sunday. Eugénie Bouchard earned her first main series win since April this year. She met her main rival, among others: tournament number one, Ons Jabeur.

14 first round matches of the Guadalajara Open Akron 2023 competition were scheduled for the first day of the competition and all were decided in straight sets. This is of course not to say that there were not great emotions on the Mexican hard courts.

Eugénie Bouchard was happy with her first victory in almost five months (since the Madrid tournament). The Canadian, who received a wild card, beat Mexican Renata Zarazua 6:1, 7:6(4). The former fifth-ranked tennis player in the world will play the second round and her opponent will be Weronika Kudermetowa on Monday. The Russian was seeded seventh and received a free ticket early.

She also meets her first rival, noted as “one” Ons Jabeur. The Tunisian will face the American Alycia Parks, who won against her compatriot Lauren Davis 6-3, 6-2. In the second round there will also be an Italian meeting between Martina Trevisan and Jasmine Paolini. The first beat the Dutch Demi Schuurs 6:2, 6:0. The latter beat the American Louisa Chirico 6-0, 7-6(3).

Kristina Mladenović, the 10th racket in the world, achieved a shameful result. The Frenchwoman left on a tennis “bike” and her conqueror turned out to be the Spaniard Cristina Bucsa. Ukrainian Anhelina Kalinina lost two matches and beat American Grace Min 6-2, 6-0.

Sunday was not a successful day for the hosts’ representatives. Zarazua lost to Bouchard, and Ana Sofia Sanchez, who passed the qualifying rounds, lost after the fight to Ukrainian Dajana Yastremska 6:7(1), 4:6. Lya Fernandez won only three matches, losing to Hailey Baptiste 2:6, 1:6. The American will meet the Czech Karolina Pliskova in the second round, initially victorious against the Japanese Ena Shibahara.

The skilled tennis players had a generally difficult day. Six of the eight qualifiers were eliminated on Monday (two will play on Monday). The American Asia Muhammad had no chance against Leylah Fernandez. The Canadian won 6-1, 6-3 and will now face Belgian Elise Mertens, who eliminated her compatriot Yanina Wickmayer.

Sloane Stephens also appeared in the second round, winning against Ann Li 7:5, 6:4. Her young compatriot, Taylor Townsend, dismissed the Australian Ajla Tomljanović and as a reward she will face the Swiss Belinda Bencic on Monday. The first match was also won by Belarusian Alaksandra Sasnowicz, who, having knocked out Dutchwoman Arantxa Rus, became the opponent of Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia.

The only Pole in the tournament, Magdalena Fręch, will play her first singles and doubles matches on Monday. Her singles opponent will be Colombian Camila Osorio at 7:00 p.m. our time.

The competition in Guadalajara will last until Saturday September 23. The winner will receive 900 WTA ranking points and a check for 454.5 thousand PLN. dollars.
