The Pittsburgh Penguins iced six Canadian players in their season opener last night against the Chicago Blackhawks. Chicago iced eight.
They all must have felt some sense of confusion when the crowd at PPG Paints Arena began chanting “Fire Canada.”
But instead of the Pittsburgh crowd being upset at the country, they were angry at one person – someone who had no relation to the game on the ice.
It’s been a tough season for fans of the NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers, who have been upset with the offense led by offensive coordinator Matt Canada.
Pittsburgh currently has the third-worst total offense in the NFL, as well as the fourth-worst offense and the third-worst rushing attack.
The two teams below them in total offense – the New York Giants and Cincinnati Bengals – both have struggling quarterbacks and have been behind subpar offensive lines.
But Pittsburgh’s previously struggling O-line appeared to be improving before the start of this season.
That hasn’t stopped Najee Harris from being one of the most underproductive running backs in the league — which can also be said of second-year quarterback Kenny Pickett.
Canada has recently been given an increased role in Pickett’s development – being tasked with working with the QB on a daily basis.
“Fire Canada” chants were also heard at Steelers games, but they have now migrated to the ice.
Pittsburgh Penguins fans did not leave happy last night, as their team lost 4-2 to the Blackhawks and their rookie sensation Connor Bedard.
