Hurricane Lee hit Nova Scotia in eastern Canada, Reuters reports.
Wind gusts of up to 30 meters per second ravage the province, and more than 153,000 people are without electricity, according to the Canadian Radio-Canada.
Lee traveled for a week across the Atlantic Ocean after heading to the northern Caribbean. Until Friday it was still a hurricane, but has now been downgraded to a tropical storm.
However, it remains dangerous and millions of people are warned not to touch it lightly. It is expected to sweep landward Saturday afternoon local time in Massachusetts and Maine, and move toward the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia with hurricane-force gusts.
There have already been a number of power outages in Massachusetts and Maine, and many trees have been downed in Maine. In parts of Maine, waves of up to four to five meters and up to 120 millimeters of rain are expected.
On Sunday night, the hurricane claimed its first victim.
