Two Grand Slam champions from the Czech Republic have withdrawn from the WTA 500 tournament in Eastbourne. One of them is Petra Kvitova, who was supposed to defend her title. In this way, the very interesting clash of the Czech woman with Jelena Ostapenko did not happen.

The Eastbourne tournament was supposed to be star-studded, but up to three Grand Slam champions and Maria Sakkari pulled out. On Tuesday, Greek and Kazakh Jelena Rybakina were joined by Petra Kvitova and Barbora Krejcikova. The first of the Czechs was to defend the title. Last week, she triumphed in Berlin.

Rybakina was the number one seed. Later, at the very top of the ladder was Krejcikova. Finally, the place of the Czech was taken by Rebecca Marino (WTA 83), happy defeat in qualification. The Canadian lost 4-6, 2-6 to Xiyu Wang (WTA 73). In 64 minutes, the Chinese used five of eight break points.

Beatriz Haddad Maia (WTA 13) defeated Marie Bouzkova (WTA 32) 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(3). The Brazilian recovered 3:6, 0:2 and led in the third set. There was no break and the tie break was the favorite. The meeting lasted two hours and 35 minutes. Haddad Maia scored four points more than the Czech (96-92).

The first-round hit was to be the match between Petra Kvitova (WTA 9) and Jelena Ostapenko (WT 17). Last week, the Czech triumphed in Berlin and the Latvian won the title in Birmingham. Last year, these tennis players met in the final at Eastbourne. However, there was no confrontation between them on Tuesday. Kvitova was replaced by Barbora Strycova (WTA 677), whom Ostapenko beat 6:4, 6:3. In the first set, the Latvian came back with 1:3 and 30-40.

Caroline Garcia (WTA 5) won 6-1, 7-5 Madison Brengle (WTA 114). In 80 minutes, the French served 12 aces and scored 33 out of 44 points on her first serve. She canceled eight of her 10 break points and took five of her six break points.

Jessica Pegula (WTA 4) defeated Qinwen Zheng (WTA 24) 6-3, 6-4. In the match, which lasted 98 minutes, the American knocked down six aces and scored 30 of 32 points on her first serve. She saved eight break points and converted two of her 10 break points.

Ons Jabeur (WTA 6) won 6-3, 6-2 against Jasmine Paolini (WTA 42). In 66 minutes, the Tunisian scored 19 points out of 22 on her first serve and got five breaks. Camila Giorgi (WTA 67) beat Heather Watson (WTA 149) 6-3, 6-4. The Italian committed 10 double faults, but scored 34 out of 38 on her first serve. She canceled six of her seven break points and got three break points.
