Leylah Fernandez and Taylor Townsend have proven that they have a license to play with Polish women. The duo that eliminated Magda Linette in doubles in Miami beat Katarzyna Kawa and Alicja Rosolska in Charleston.
During their career, Katarzyna Kawa and Alicja Rosolska played only one tournament together. It took place in 2022 in Warsaw, where they managed to reach the final. Despite the good performances of the Polish team that season, they did not decide to start again together.
That changed in 2024. Kawa and Rosolska decided to join forces in the WTA 500 tournament in Charleston. However, they were unlucky in the draw as in the first round they had to compete with Leylah Fernandez and Taylor Townsend. The Canadian-American duo in Miami reached the final, knocking out Magda Linette in the semis.
Fernandez and Townsend started the encounter with a solid strike. They quickly managed to break our tennis players twice, thanks to which they led 4:0. The Polish players made up for some losses (3:4), but they couldn’t afford more. The Canadian and the American won the inaugural 6:4.
Kawa and Rosolska got off to a better start in the second set. They were leading 3-0 with a break. However, from this moment began the domination of their rivals. They won up to six games in a row and deprived their opponents of illusions. Thus, the set ended with the score 6:3.
Our tennis players’ adventure in Charleston only lasted an hour and 15 minutes. Fernandez and Townsend won 6:4, 6:3 and quickly expelled the Poles from the tournament.
