Pablo Andujar lost to Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the first round of the ATP 500 clay tournament in Barcelona and was honored after the match for his lifetime achievement. The inaugural rivals were greeted by event favorites.
Pablo Andujar’s best result in the Barcelona tournament is the 2015 season final. This year, the Spaniard took part in this event for the ninth and last time. In his farewell performance, he was knocked out in the first round, losing 2-6, 5-7 to Tomas Martin Etcheverry.
After the match, a beautiful ceremony took place on the court. Andujar, 37, who will retire at the end of the season, was honored for his lifetime achievement. He received a memorial tray from Tommy Robredo, a friend of the professional games, and was accompanied by his loved ones.
Barcelona Open Banc debutant Sabadell Etcheverry (three aces and six breaks on Monday) could be gearing up for a second-round game against tenth seed Alejandro Davidovich.
Defending champion and top seed Carlos Alcaraz’s first rival was Nuno Borges. The Portuguese served two aces, used five of 20 break points and in less than an hour and a half beat Ilya Ivashka 6-2, 6-3.
Number three Casper Ruud will face Ben Shelton for the opener. The American won 7-5, 6-4 against his compatriot, Mackenzie McDonald. In turn, Frances Tiafoe, the “five” tournament, in her first match will face Emil Ruusuvuori, who gave Aleksander Bublik three matches.
Bernabe Zapata won 6-2, 6-2 over Attila Balazs and will face 13th seed Roberto Bautista in the second round. Nicolas Jarry also won without losing a set, which proved to be better than qualifier Marco Trungelliti, and his next rival will be Karen Khachanov, the “six” of the tournament.
After three-set fights, knockout tennis players Jozef Kovalik and Paweł Kotow qualified for the 1/16 finals. The Slovak unexpectedly beat Pedro Martinez and will now face number 14 seed Denis Shapovalov. The Muscovite, however, in the qualifying game dealt Oleksiy Krutych, and will fight for promotion in the third round with Cameron Norrie scored ‘seven’.
