Victoria Azarenka in Madrid (WTA 1000) has made the final twice. This time, the former leader of the ranking was eliminated after her loss to American Alycia Parks. Bianca Andreescu said goodbye to the tournament, squandering a high lead against Xiyu Wang.

The second round ended on Friday in Madrid. Wiktoria Azarenka (WTA 16), double finalist of this tournament (2011, 2012), joined the competition. This time, the former leader and 2012 and 2013 Australian Open champion was disappointed and lost 2-6, 6-7(5) to Alycia Parks (WTA 54).

Petra Martić (WTA 33) defeated Laura Siegemund (WTA 128) 7-6(6), 6-3. In the first set, the Croatian came back 2:4.

Marie Bouzkova (WTA 31) defeated Alaksandra Sasnowicz (WTA 47) 6-4, 6-7(4), 6-3. The match lasted two hours and 45 minutes. The Czech sent seven aces. She canceled eight of her 11 break points and converted five of her 15 break points. Lesia Tsurenko (WTA 77) won 3:6, 6:2, 6:4 Jil Teichmann (WTA 30). In the third set, the Ukrainian won six of seven consecutive matches by 0:3.

Ekaterina Aleksandrova (WTA 17) won 7:6(2), 6:3 against Alize Cornet (WTA 71). Both players had four break points each. The Frenchwoman scored a break and served twice.
