On Tuesday evening, a young man died in a traffic accident in Lund in Rogaland, confirms the police district of Sør-West. Now Lund Mayor Eia is demanding progress on the development of the E39 through Drangsdalen, where the accident happened.
– If you look at the accident statistics, you will find dozens of fatal accidents in Drangsdalen over the last twenty years. So far this year, and earlier this year, we’ve had two fatal accidents. It’s very sad that it’s happening again, Eia told Dagbladet.
– Could have been avoided
The previous fatal accident occurred in January. One person lost his life in a collision with a trailer. Drangsdalen stretches between Moi and Ualand.
– Every time a fatal accident occurs in Drangsdalen, we believe it could have been avoided with better roads. With an average discount, the accident in January would not have taken place. We know less about what happened tonight, says Eia.
It was at 7.58pm that police received a report that a car had collided with a tree along the road in Drangsdalen. Firefighters had to free the man from the car and he received life-saving first aid from paramedics at the scene. His life could not be saved and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
It is still unclear what caused the accident, according to the police. Only the deceased was in the damaged car in question.
– Very sad
Drangsdalen is part of the European route in western Norway, and traffic passes 24 hours a day, according to the mayor.
– There are fatal accidents almost every year. This is a well-known challenge and problem. Especially in the winter period. That’s why we’re looking forward to a new E39, she says and adds:
– Improvements have been made here, but this is the second fatal accident on the road this year, and we only reached March 21. It’s very sad.
The mayor also says there is great frustration with the development of the E39.
– It has completely stopped and is causing us great frustration. There is now talk of starting to build it from Stavanger and Kristiansand. Lund is in the middle and in this case will come out last, she said.
Last week the district mayors had a development meeting in Kvinesdal with Nye Veier.
– There were signals that progress might be delayed. That the road will not be completed before 2040-2044. We hope that won’t happen, she said.
