The fall of four flying objects over the United States and Canada is still shrouded in mystery.
The United States is clear that the Chinese balloon shot down on February 5 was used for espionage purposes. But when it comes to three smaller objects that were shot down last week, a lot is unclear.
– I know there have been questions and concerns about this, but there is no, again no indication of extraterrestrial or extraterrestrial activity with these recent shootings, said press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre at the White House on Monday evening.
Constitution of special teams
The authorities still call them “objects”, and cannot say who they belong to or what they are used for.
The US Department of Defense, the Pentagon, claims that all are unmanned and without any type of engine. They will float with the wind.
There have been various signals as to whether they all look like balloons. But today Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said:
– Clearly there is some kind of pattern here. The fact that we’ve seen this significantly over the past week gives reason to take a close look at this.
The first balloon came from China and was first spotted over the Aleutian Islands off Alaska on January 28.
It was shot down off South Carolina.
Just over a week later, an unknown object was shot down off the northern coast of Alaska.
The next day, Canadian fighters took to the skies and shot down an object over the Yukon.
Two days later, another unknown object was spotted over the United States and then shot down.
This time in the state of Michigan.
– Very serious situation
Trudeau held a press conference around the same time as the White House. The theme in both places was the objects that were shot
Trudeau says they are working to find the remains of what was shot, but bad weather is making it difficult.
– This is a very serious situation, said Trudeau.
The White House announced Monday evening that President Joe Biden will bring together a group of experts from several agencies to investigate the numerous flying objects that have recently been discovered over North America.
China responds
So far, this is only the first major balloon the United States has linked to China. For its part, China replied that it had detected a number of balloons that the United States had sent to its territory, which the United States denied.
Senior researcher Hans Jørgen Gåsmyr of the Norwegian Foreign Policy Institute (NUPI) says the picture is very unclear.
– If the Americans discover that several of the objects that have been shot down in recent days are intelligence-related and point to China, then we are in the midst of a major incident, to which China will respond, says Gåsmyr.
He says it’s no secret that there is active espionage on both sides.
– This is a major event in the United States, but relatively little mentioned in China. I think senior management was sober and didn’t push too hard on it, says Gåsmyr.
Director of Intelligence Tom Røseth of the Norwegian Defense Academy says balloons have the advantage of being able to be fitted with light, modern equipment and intercepting military communications on the ground.
It was shot
The Pentagon spotted a balloon the size of three buses when it entered US airspace on February 1 of this year. The balloon also visited Canadian airspace, before being shot down off the east coast of the United States on February 5.
The United States claims it was used for espionage purposes, but this is denied by China, which says it was a weather balloon that got lost.
On February 3, a similar balloon was observed over Latin America. Among other things, it would have flown over Colombia.
February 10 says John Kirby, spokesman for the United States National Security Council, that an unknown object had been shot down over Alaska. The object fell in US territorial waters in northern Alaska, on the border with Canada,
The next day, February 11, Canadian and American fighters set sail across the Yukon. Othe plane was shot down by an American F-22, writes the Prime Minister in a Twitter Saturday message. This object had to be cylindrical.
Two days later, on February 13, another unknown object was spotted over the United States and then shot down. This time in the state of Michigan.
According to Pentagon sources, the object was octagonal and had no visible cargo. It was at an altitude of approximately 20,000 feet and was shot down on the orders of President Joe Biden.
