Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who wants to end all open-cage salmon farming in British Columbia within five years, will likely remain in power.
He brings back VGquoting the Canadian Radio-Canada.
Trudeau has so far led a majority government, but will likely now have to rely on the support of another party and form a minority government.
The first results place the Liberal Party in the lead in 25 of the 32 constituencies in the region, writes VG.
Earlier this month, it was announced that Trudeau wants salmon farming to be closed at British Columbia facilities within five years. This could affect both Mowi, Cermaq and Grieg Seafood, which operate in the region.
Trudeau’s proposal has been criticized from several sides.
In an article from Business Vancouver Don Noakes, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology at Vancouver Island University, said:
– I can only speculate on the reasons for this commitment, but in no case is it based on credible scientific evidence. Canada has enormous potential to significantly increase aquaculture production, but this policy is counterproductive.
It is already clear that Mowi and Cermaq will have to close up to 17 facilities in British Columbia. Five are already closed.
