At the Hiroshima summit, leaders of G7 countries discussed reducing economic dependence on China and limiting risks to business supply chains. In a statement, the G7 also rejected China’s territorial claims in the East and South China Seas and warned against using military force against democratically-ruled Taiwan.
This led to what is known as an unusually strong reaction from the Foreign Ministry in Beijing.
A spokesperson accused the G7 countries of “ignoring China’s serious concerns” and promoting policies that “would hinder international peace, damage regional stability and suppress development in other countries”.
China expresses its displeasure and protested to Japan, which is the host country of the G7 meeting, in addition to other participating countries. China’s foreign ministry describes the G7 as a small group trying to impose rules on the world that serve the interests of the United States and a handful of allies.
In addition to the United States, the G7 also includes Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Japan and Canada as well as the EU.
