David Goffin was down a set and a break, but beat Luka Nardi in the first round of the ATP Masters 1000 clay tournament in Rome. Another young Italian, Giulio Zeppieri, didn’t use the wild card either.
David Goffin has been famous for his bravery since the beginning of his career. And it was this trait that allowed him to defeat wild card holder Luka Nardi in the first round match of the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Rome. The Belgian was losing 3-6 and 2-4 but since then he has won ten out of 13 games played and eventually won 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Goffin served three aces in two hours and 22 minutes, converted four of five break points and reached 15 finishes. In the second round, the 32-year-old Belgian will face Alexander Zverev, tournament “19”.
Another Italian, Giulio Zeppieri, didn’t use the joker either. The 21-year-old from Rome lost 6-7(3), 6-4, 0-6 to Daniel Altmaier. The German qualifier will face Frances Tiafoe, seeded 12th, in the 1/32 final.
Marco Cecchinato made the local supporters happy. The 30-year-old from Palermo had two aces and four breaks to his name and after a 95-minute duel proved better than Mackenzie McDonald. Italy will be fighting for promotion to the Round of 16 with number 21 Roberto Bautista.
After a match in three sets, Jason Kubler also qualified for the second round. The Australian beat Mark-Andrea Huesler 6-7(6), 6-4, 6-2 and will face ’31’ Bernabe Zapata in the next stage of the tournament.
Smooth victories were taken by Thiago Monteiro and Roberto Carballes. The Brazilian gave Adrian Mannarino three games and will face 15th seed Borna Coric in the second round. In turn, the Spaniard beat Hugo Dellien 6-2, 6-3, and his next rival will be Daniel Evans, of the “20” tournament.
