Davis Cup: Historic triumph for Canada in the final

The Canadians won the Davis Cup.

Canadian tennis players won the Davis Cup for the first time in history. In the final in Malaga, they beat Australia 2-0 after singles wins: Denis Shapovalov over Thanasi Kokkinakis 6-2, 6-4 and Felix Auger-Aliassime over Alex de Minaur 6-3, 6-4.

– These emotions are difficult to describe. We are all here and we have dreamed of this moment. It’s a dream come true,” commented Auger-Aliassime.

It was only Canada’s second final at the tournament. In 2019 – with the same composition – the North American team succumbed to Spain. Australia have won 28 times, the last time in 2003.

In World Group I, sixteen teams entered the competition – they were divided into four groups. Two teams from each group qualified for the knockout stage. From the quarter-finals, the competition was held according to a knockout system in Malaga.

Reigning champions Russia, who beat Croatia 2-0 in the last final, were banned from the tournament following sanctions imposed by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) after the armed invasion of Ukraine .
