Last week, DinSide wrote that the risk of forest fires in eastern Norway is high. Fires and bonfires are prohibited.
On Saturday evening, the Vestfold Intermunicipal Fire Service called after reports of a smoldering fire. It was a cigarette butt that had ignited the ground, according to firefighters.
– We dug 20 centimeters into the ground and measured at 280 degrees, then extinguished. Not on a large scale. Elm fire in the ground and roots isn’t always easy to detect, until the wind blows the fire, and with drought it can get violent, says Fire Chief Svein Erik Anderssen in a new facebook posts.
Change the rules
Irresponsible
– We think the fire started with a cigarette butt. It is now directly irresponsible to smoke and toss snipes in forests and other outbacks. Any use of open flames is prohibited in these areas, including smoking, continues the fire chief.
A cigarette butt can be a fire hazard, especially these days.
– That’s because the glow of a cigarette is as dangerous as a match, says Arnt E. Folvik, information adviser at the Vestfold Intermunicipal Fire Service.
A fire does not necessarily occur immediately. The snipe can remain incandescent for several days, before it can finally catch fire and spread the fire.
– It can turn into something very difficult, points out Folvik.
Reacts: – Stupid invention
Do not do that
– When people drive 80 kilometers on the road and throw it out the window, it’s extremely irresponsible, says the information adviser.
It is incredibly dry and the risk of forest fires is high in several places in the country. Don’t blunt the cigarette butt without thinking, that’s Folvik’s advice.
There’s not that much attention paid to it with cigarette butts, but it’s extremely important, he points out.
can be scary
How about a flower pot?
– Dulling the smoke in a flowerpot is absolutely not recommended, Folvik clarifies.
He says it’s better to use a jam jar with water in it.
– Overflowing ashtrays that overflow from the wall of the house can also be scary since the wooden walls are drying out day by day, he points out.
He says if you have maximum bad luck, things can go wrong.
