Dominic Thiem missed a wild card and lost to Lorenzo Sonego in the first round of the ATP Masters 1000 hardcourt tournament in Miami. Richard Gasquet and Grégoire Barrère won duels in three sets.
Dominic Thiem has already been seeded in ATP Masters 1000 tournaments. Now he needs a wildcard to play in events of this magnitude. The Miami Open organizers gave him a chance in the form of a main draw assist, but the Austrian didn’t use it. He was eliminated in the first round after losing 6-7(7), 2-6 to Lorenzo Sonego.
Sonego, 27, owes his victory to aggressive play. He made 28 finishers, served six aces and scored 48 of 65 on his own serve. In the second round, the Italian will face 23rd seed Daniel Evans.
More effective than Thiem turned out to be another, gradually leaving the scene, the former star of the game, Richard Gasquet. The 36-year-old Frenchman beat Christopher O’Connell, the lucky loser of the qualifying round, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 after a match lasting nearly two hours. So, in the 1/32 final there will be an interesting meeting – Gasquet with number two Stefano Tsitsipas.

After a three-set duel, another Frenchman, Grégoire Barrere, also advanced to the second round, beating qualifier Roman Safiullin, and his next rival will be 11th seed Cameron Norrie. Benoît Paire was eliminated. The 33-year-old from Avignon proved weaker than Yosuke Watanuki in the playoff game. The Japanese will face Frances Tiafoe, tournament “12”, for a rise in 1/16 final.
Fifth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime will face Thiago Monteiro in his inaugural match. The Brazilian beat Jason Kubler. In his turn, marked “14”, Karen Khachanov will first face Tomas Martin Etcheverry, winner with the qualifier Pawel Kotov.
Thursday evening, the hosts also had reason to be happy. Mackenzie McDonald beat Daniel Elahi Galan 6-4, 6-2 in an hour and a half. In the second round, the American will face the number 19 seed Matteo Berrettini.
