Haaland’s two goals against Leeds were special in many ways. The Norwegian was born in Leeds and his father, Alfie Haaland, played for Leeds and Manchester City.
– When I was little I had a Leeds kit with Eirik Bakke on the back and a City kit with dad on the back. It’s a special day for me and my family, I’m proud, Haaland told Viaplay.
His second score of the evening also went down in history. It was his 20th goal in 14 games.
No one else in Premier League history has scored 20 times in fewer games.
– Haaland has an incredible ability to know where he needs to be to score goals, and a hunger that I’ve never seen before. It’s contagious in the team. He’s one of my favorite players to watch, says Leeds manager Jessie March BBC After the game.
He was Haaland’s coach at Red Bull Salzburg,
– It’s completely unbelievable. Records won’t just be broken, they will be broken by Haaland, writes former top scorer Michael Owen Twitter.
Kevin Phillips held the previous record with 20 goals in 21 games.
Plan a scaled-down party
Haaland’s two goals today were the easiest. The first he was served into an open goal by Jack Grealish, and there Haaland was safe.
This same recipe was just as deadly ten minutes later. Grealish descended to the dead line and lay flat in the box. There Haaland was waiting, who swept the ball away with the wrong foot.
On both scores, there was a muted celebration from Haaland.
– It was expected. I didn’t want to applaud, I have respect for Leeds. This is where I was born. But I clapped with Jack, he had two fantastic assists, says Haaland.
It was also Haaland’s 24th and 25th goals in 20 games under Guardiola’s management. No one has scored more in such a short time under the Spaniard.
It took Lionel Messi 28 games to reach 25 goals under Guardiola.
Haaland suffered an ankle injury before the Premier League went on a World Cup break. He wasn’t clear of the injury when he returned to the training ground, Guardiola reveals.
– I feel like he’s still not at his best. He’s scored two goals, but his pace isn’t quite where it could be. He needs time. He still played 90 minutes and scored two fantastic goals, Guardiola tells Viaplay and adds:
– But I have the feeling that it’s not Erling as he was in the first part of the season, Guardiola told Viaplay.
Lost a chance
Even before the minute was played, Haaland was alone with the goalkeeper, but Illan Meslier in the Leeds goal managed to prevent a goal.
After the terrific start to the game, it took half an hour before Haaland left. Kevin De Bruyne found the Norwegian with a millimeter pass. Again, Meslier won the duel against Haaland and saved the shot.
– I told the others in the locker room, I could score five goals. That’s life, I have to train more, Haaland tells Amazon Prime.
Immediately after, Jack Grealish had a huge opportunity as he placed the ball three yards out. In extra time in the first half, the same man had another chance from close range, but this time too he put the ball over the goal.
City nevertheless took the lead at the break. Rodri was the first on a rebound and sent the visiting team ahead.
Pascal Struijk reduced from a corner just over a quarter of an hour before the end, but City controlled the victory. As a result, they overtake Newcastle in the table and are second, five points behind leaders Arsenal.
The next opportunity for Haaland to score even more goals is on New Year’s Eve. Then Manchester City meet Everton at home.
