Former Georgian international Kristine Esebua beat teammate Virginie Chenier, 6-4, in the women’s recurve final to qualify Canada for a quota spot at the 2024 Paris Olympics in the continental qualifiers today in Medellin, Colombia.
Each country could only earn one spot in this event – so the second available ticket went to third-place finisher Alondra Rivera of Puerto Rico.
“I am very happy with the result. “Truthfully, I worked really hard and competed hard with my teammate,” Rivera said. “The emotion is strong for such an enormous result. I couldn’t ask for more.
This is the first time the country has qualified for the Olympics since Maria Reyes participated in Atlanta in 1996.
“Next comes the Pan American Championships. Then I will continue to work and hope to continue representing Puerto Rico abroad,” Rivera continued.
The 22-year-old also beat a teammate for her place on the podium.
She and Nilka Cotto went to the tie-break, with both shoot-off arrows landing low left in the eight – but Rivera’s was measured just a millimeter closer to the center of the target.
“I was so nervous. She is also an excellent archer. “It was enough to win,” she said afterwards.
Competition continues in this Pan American qualifier for this summer’s Olympic Games with the final of the recurve men’s quota tournament. Archers from El Salvador, the US Virgin Islands, Argentina, Bermuda and Cuba are aiming for two tickets.
