- The homeland and kingdom of dog sledding are of course the northern polar regions: Alaska, Canada, Scandinavian countries
- In Poland, dog sledding has a 30-year tradition
Even a dog is enough
– I have 18 huskies, my parents have 16 malamutes. It’s our family passion: it started with the fact that when I was five years old, my parents bought the first malamute. We all play it: us, my children. We opened a musher school, we do training, says Justyna Wydra, owner of a husky dog kennel, musher, dog sledding instructor, and therapist. – There are many dog sled races in Poland, in which we have different categories, so even a person with only one dog can enjoy this sport – he encourages.
– The weight doesn’t matter, because it’s not like standing on a sled or a wheelchair, but you have to help the dogs and push yourself. You just need to be athletic, to have reflexes and to love sport, he adds.
The basis is obedience
– Dog sledding is a dangerous, extreme sport and you have to do it with your head. The most important thing when buying a dog for sled sports is not to run with a puppy from an early age – you have to be very careful with his joints as he develops – but you have to teach him obedience – explains the guest Trójkowy. – I can’t imagine the opposite: I weigh very little, and sometimes I ride with ten dogs, so they have to listen to me – he adds.
– If someone is buying a dog for sledding, I would advise them to go to a few dog sled races, see what it’s all about, learn from others, listen to experienced mushers , to have a lot of humility. He can also look for toboggan clubs in the area, go to a school for machinists – he advises.
