No success for the Polish epee specialists in the tournaments of the Cadet World Championships in Plovdiv. On Easter Saturday, Magda Ratyna and Szymon Wojciechowski were the best on the table in Bulgaria, but the Whites and Reds didn’t play the main roles.
On Saturday, at the Plovdiv World Championships, cadets and cadets competed in epee. Three Polish women went through the direct qualifiers in a very good style, where Magda Ratyna did the best, without losing a single fight, Oliwia Janeczek won four times and lost only to two rivals, as well as Aleksandra Szymańska, who finished this part of the competition with a balance of 3:2.
Aleksandra Szymańska initially did very well in the main tournament, starting with a 15:11 win over Britain’s Sofia Gerhardt and then beating South Korea’s Soyeon Kim 15:8, but her march ended in 1/16 finals and lost 10:11 duel with Li-Hsiang Huang – representative of Taiwan. The fate of Ratyna and Janczek was interesting. Janeczek started with a victory over Raisa Gylymkhan of Mongolia 15:6, then she beat Esther Tan of Singapore 15:9, and Ratyna won with Anna Platkova of Latvia 15:12. Thus, the two Poles had to cross swords at the stage of the 1/16 finals. Ratyna was better in the ratio of 15:11, but in the next duel she lost to Hungarian Blanca Virag Nagy 6:15.
Ranking of the women’s tournament:
1. Blanka Virag Nagy – Hungary
2. Mizuki Homma – Japan
3. Nicole Xuan – Canada and Li-Hsiang Hung – Taipei
In the men’s group playoff, Szymon Wojciechowski performed very well and remained undefeated in his group. Filip Krochmalski succumbed to only one rival. Szymon Walkowiak went a bit worse, who scored a 2:4 balance, but got into straight fights. There Walkowiak won with Slovenian Leon Cernjak 15:11, but later proved weaker than Greek Vasileios Tsokas (8:15). Unfortunately, his colleague’s fate was shared by Filip Krochmalski, who after winning 15:13 with Romanian George Petrache, lost to Aleksander Bezrodnov from the United States. Our greatest hopes have been raised by Szymon Wojciechowski. The Pole started with an easy 15:6 victory over Sweden’s Elwin Elg, then beat Krochmalski’s winner – Aleksander Bezrodnow 15:11. In the next fight, however, the representative of the Virgin Islands – Kruz Schembri turned out to be better, winning 15:14. Thus, the representatives of Poland could not count Saturday as a success.
Ranking of the men’s tournament:
1. Domonkos Pelle – Hungary
2. Kruz Schembri – Virgin Islands
3. Rayan Rami Rozpide – Spain and Noam Duchene – France
