Norway commends parties in Colombia for peace progress

The Colombian government and the rebel group ELN agree to negotiate a ceasefire. Norway, which is participating in the process, sends its congratulations.

The parties announced on Friday that they had agreed to start negotiations. Peace talks are taking place in Mexico.

According to Pablo Beltrán of the ELN, “the first steps have been taken to reach a ceasefire”, reports the AFP news agency. A ceasefire is the desire of the entire Colombian nation, says José Otty Patiño, government negotiator.

Norway is a guarantor of the peace process and assists the parties. Norwegian diplomats actively participated in the negotiations in Mexico.

– Congratulations to the Colombian government and the ELN guerrillas for the significant progress made after the peace talks in Mexico. It is about involving the local population in the peace process, improving the humanitarian situation in vulnerable areas and a future ceasefire, Foreign Minister Anniken Huitfeldt (Ap) told NTB.

Norway also wants people in place for the next round of talks in Cuba.
