Joe Biden, Emmanuel Macron and Olaf Scholz are on the list of participants in the meeting which begins on Friday.
The G7 is made up of the United States, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Canada, Italy, Japan and the European Union. But South Korea, India, Brazil and several other countries have also been invited to Hiroshima.
The host country, Japan, is likely to hope that the summit will help bring major developing countries closer to the wealthy, democratic part of the world.
Concretely, it will also be a question of convincing the developing countries to adopt a colder attitude vis-à-vis Russia and China.
Is Zelensky coming?
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj is expected to address the summit via video link.
Zelenskyj is also planning to visit Japan, Ukrainian authorities told Japanese news agency Kyodo. But that depends, among other things, on the situation on the battlefield in Ukraine.
After the invasion of Ukraine, the G7 countries coalesced into a hard line against Russia. Massive sanctions were imposed to punish Vladimir Putin’s regime.
However, the relationship with China has been more difficult. While the United States has continued its trade war against China, several European countries are trying to tread more carefully.
– This will not be an anti-China G7 meeting, an adviser to French President Emmanuel Macron said ahead of the summit in Japan.
