Despite the approach of Easter, Polish tennis players participated in the ITF World Tennis Tour in various parts of the world. Weronika Falkowska and Daniel Michalski achieved a very good performance in Italy.

Daniel Michalski was seeded in the Italian resort of Santa Margherita di Pula in Sardinia ($25,000 prize pool) and dropped just two sets en route to the final. They were taken from him by the Italian Luigi Sorrentino (2nd round) and the Portuguese Goncalo Oliveira (semi-final). In the title game, Timo Legout, marked with the “eight”, got in the way of the Warsaw people.

Two titles in Sardinia

After an hour and 54 minutes, Michalski won Saturday’s final against the Frenchman 6:4, 6:3. In each set, he developed a two-break advantage, which the rival only managed to reduce in the final phase of each set. In the end, the winner of the whole event was a Pole, who claimed the ninth singles championship on professional courts.

Weronika Falkowska also had a great week in Santa Margherita di Pula. At the inauguration, the Warsaw native proved to be better than her compatriot, Maja Chwalińska, who scratched at 2:5. Then our tennis player won the French Fiona Ferro, who knew the women’s circuit well, then turned the tide of the match with the Greek Valentini Grammatikopoulou. In the semi-final Falkowska was stopped by Yekaterina Makarova (not to be confused with the Russian doubles player of the same name), who won 6:2, 6:3.

Falkowska did not leave the Italian meal empty-handed. With Grammatikopoulou she competed in doubles and both ladies advanced to Saturday’s final. In the title match, the Polish-Greek player, marked with the second number, defeated Italian Angelika Moratelli and Dutch Arantxa Rus 6:1, 6:1. For Falkowska, who recently made her Top 100 debut in the doubles rankings, it is the 18th career trophy on the professional doubles courts.

The Poles in a historic tournament

Natalia Kowalczyk and Weronika Baszak decided to start the tournament in Bujumbura. This is the first-ever women’s competition in Burundi and was organized by rising Burundian star Sada Nahimana, who trains at Patrick Mouratoglou’s academy. Kowalczyk made it to the main group through eliminations, but in the first round she was worse than South Africa’s Wozuko Mdlulwa. Baszak won early with Germany’s Jasmin Jebawy, then proved to be better than killer Kowalczyk. In the quarter-finals, the player from Wrocław did not meet Ukrainian Valeria Strachowa (1:6, 3:6).

Polish duels took place in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. In the first round, Gina Feistel won with Alicja Formella 6:3, 6:3 and became the opponent of Martyna Kubka. Scored “six”, the Pole won 6:2, 7:6(5). In the quarterfinals, Kubka faced Meiling Wang. After a three-set fight, the Chinese defeated our representative 6:7(4), 7:6(3), 7:5.

The remaining Whites and Reds did not achieve any notable results. Karolina Jaśkiewicz failed in the qualifying round in Sharm el-Sheikh and Juliusz Bienkiewicz was eliminated in qualifying in Antalya, Turkey. Paweł Ciaś, who lost in the first round of the singles tournament, also failed to conquer the Egyptian courts. Przemysław Michocki reached the Croatian Dubrovnik main ladder thanks to eliminations. However, he did not follow suit and was eliminated in the first phase.
