Dønnum’s double in extra time saved Vålerenga from the smell of the cup
Vålerenga looked to be in for a real knockout blow against 3rd Division side Brumunddal in the NM second round, but thanks to two goals from Aron Dønnum they can head home in Oslo with a 4-3 win and the credit is somewhat preserved.
– It feels good. It’s always difficult, but I understand the fans and the bench is getting impatient. I saw that there were other teams that smoked, and it is difficult with such matches. But I think we are good at sticking to it, Dønnum tells NRK.
Dønnum first equalized a minute into extra time, before dribbling a few seconds later downfield and slotting the ball into the far corner. Vålerenga had never led the deliberate colony before.
VIF has long struggled against a compact and solid defense. Finstad sent the home side ahead after 38 minutes before Eivind Strand Osmo doubled in late in the first half. Then many at Sveum Sports Park believed in a tiny cup miracle for Brumunddal.
Vålerenga got off to a good start after the break when Henrik Udahl cut back after just a minute. The 25-year-old eventually had several great chances in the set, but neither he nor his blue-clad teammates managed to put the ball in the goal before 75 minutes.
Then Zuta equalized but just nine minutes later Brumunddal’s Mikkel Frankmo stepped in and stunned the ball further into the goal off a Preben Finstad post. That gave Brumunddal a 3-2 lead, but it should be in extra time. (NTB / NRK)
