Iga Świątek started the WTA 1000 tournament in Dubai well. The leader of the rankings easily got by with Canadian Leylah Fernandez, runner-up at the 2021 US Open.
Iga Świątek defended her title in Doha last week. The leader of the ranking moved to Dubai, where she joined the competition in the second round. On Tuesday, her rival was Leylah Fernandez, whom she easily beat in Adelaide a year ago (6-1, 6-2). This time the Polish woman also had no problems. She won 6-1, 6-1.
At the opening of the first set, Świątek held the application after a hard fight for the advantage. Fernandez couldn’t handle the first serve attempt. The break happened when the Canadian threw a forehand. The 2021 US Open runner-up couldn’t find her groove and made some bad decisions. She tried to speed up the game, but she made mistakes.
Fernandez couldn’t seal the fourth game, even though she was leading 40-15. There was too much hesitation in his game at the important moments. Świątek played fast and very accurate balls, which she scattered her rival into the corners. The Pole did not avoid a worse moment. In the fifth game, she returned the application throwing the backhand.

Fernandez played a little better. She had some very good games, but her temperament fluctuated and she couldn’t maintain a good level for long. In the sixth game, she returned the application by throwing the forehand. Świątek was too solid to afford to lose serve again. She made it 6:1 with an ace.
Fernandez lacked consistency in the match. She could start the game well, then lose points in the playoffs. In the opener of the second game, she gave a 30-0 application. Swiatek was more efficient in all elements of the game, although she had a slight hesitation. This time, however, she came out of trouble in great style. In the fourth match, the Pole responded to two break points.
In Świątek’s game, the forehand worked very well, which gave him a break at 4:1. Fernandez reconciled with her fate, which made her more relaxed and showed more interesting actions. The Pole had no mercy for the Canadian and once again withdrew her serve. In the seventh game, the leader of the classification ended the encounter with a spectacular backhand.
Swiatek served five aces in 72 minutes and scored 21 of 30 on his first serve. The Pole threw 17 knockouts with 14 unforced errors. Fernandez was credited with eight straight wins and 23 errors. The league leader defended two out of three break points and used six out of seven break opportunities.
Fernandez has two titles in the main series to his name. She won both in Monterrey, in 2021 and 2022. At the 2021 US Open, she reached her first Grand Slam final. She lost to Britain’s Emma Raducan.
Both tennis players won a Grand Slam tournament in the junior singles category. Fernandez triumphed at Roland Garros 2019 after defeating American Emma Navarro. Świątek won the title at Wimbledon 2018 after defeating Switzerland’s Leonie Küng.
Another Świątek rival will be Ludmiła Samsonowa. The game will take place on Wednesday. This will be their second match. Last season, in the semi-finals in Stuttgart, the Pole won 67(4), 6:4, 7:5.
