It was last Saturday that Julia Mary Lane from Queensland, Australia went missing after a summit trip to Canada.

The 24-year-old, described by friends and family as a hiker and mountaineer, had traveled to North America in January this year to “explore the country’s high peaks and deep valleys”, said Julia’s brother, Conor. ABC News newspaper.

On Monday of this week, she was found dead.

Disappeared in the mountains

Julia had been hiking to the summit near the Bear Lake Trail in British Columbia on Friday last week, reported The Guardian. After that, no one had heard from her – which her roommates and family members said was “very unusual”.

A search operation has been launched to find the 24-year-old, with several teams, dogs and drones.

The Guardian reported on Saturday that the young woman’s car was found in the area and her Garmin watch recorded no activity after Friday morning.

– We just hope that everything goes well, and that our daughter comes home safely, Julia’s mother, Rosalind Lane told ABC.

Found dead

After an extensive search operation in the area, the 24-year-old has now been found dead, according to reports Australian newspaper 9News.

James Grandy of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police told the newspaper that it appears the young woman lost her footing on steep terrain.

– It’s nothing but a tragic accident, he clarifies further, specifying that she was found Monday evening local time.

Julia’s family took to social media again – but this time without giving up hope. They tell 9 News they are in mourning and will need time and peace to process the tragic event.

“We lost our beautiful daughter in an unfortunate hiking accident. She loved traveling and the mountains, and was just full of love (…) It’s just absolutely terrible”, we read, among others, in the statement posted on Facebook.

Several of Julia’s friends also shared their greetings on the 24-year-old’s Facebook profile. They describe Julia as “a bubbly, sweet and full of life person”, who only wanted the best for everyone.
