Kenin prevails in the clash of the United States Grand Slam champions. Vondrusova’s promotion

During the WTA 1000 tournament in Indian Wells, there was a confrontation between the Grand Slam champions and the United States. Sofia Kenin handled Sloane Stephens easily. Marketa Vondrousova from the Czech Republic probably qualified for the next round.

The first round ended in Indian Wells. In this phase, there was a confrontation between Sofia Kenin (WTA 170) and Sloane Stephens (WTA 48). The former is the 2020 Australian Open champion. The latter triumphed at the 2017 US Open. In California, Kenin proved better, beating her compatriot 6:4, 6:1.

In 81 minutes, Kenin saved three of his four break points and converted four of his 10 break points. The 24-year-old American is trying to get back to a high level after health problems. In January, she reached the semi-finals in Hobart, but in four consecutive tournaments, she won a match on aggregate. The next rival for the former fourth-ranked singles player will be Wimbledon champion Kazaszka Jelena Rybakina.

Marketa Vondrousova (WTA 105) defeated Rebecca Marino (WTA 75) 6-2, 6-2. In 70 minutes, the 2019 Roland Garros finalist gave her break rival no chance, and used four out of eight break points. Another Czech woman also won the promotion. Karolina Muchova (WTA 76) defeated Yulia Putintseva (WTA 42) 6:3, 4:6, 6:4. In the third set, the 2021 Australian Open 1:4 semi-finalist won five in a row. In the second round, she will face Victoria Azarenka, who triumphed in Indian Wells in 2012 and 2016.

Madison Brengle (WTA 87) won 7-6(5), 6-4 over Laura Siegemund (WTA 124). In the first set, the American is reborn from 0-4. In the second, she also had to make up for losses. From 0:3, she won six of the next seven games. Sorana Cirstea (WTA 83) defeated Kimberly Birrell (WTA 115) 6-3, 6-2. In 80 minutes, the Romanian scored 24 points out of 32 on her first serve. She used five of her 10 break points.

Peyton Stearns (WTA 126) defeated Rebecca Masarova (WTA 92) 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. In the match which lasted 2.5 hours, the Spaniard served 14 aces and the American had just one. The hosts’ representative allowed four assists and got five breaks. In the second round, Stearns will face Bianca Andreescu, the winner of the 2019 event.

Nuria Parrizas Diaz (WTA 88) came from 1-4 down in the second set to win 6-3, 7-5 over Elisabetta Cocciaretto (WTA 50). Emma Navarro (WTA 128) beat Catherine McNally (WTA 73) 1-6, 6-1, 6-1. The lowest-ranked American hit 14 of 20 break points and converted eight of 18 break points.
