(Elbil24): There are many creative solutions to improving traffic. The other day we wrote about a special camera that captured the litter using artificial intelligence, and this time the trip goes to Canada, where they try to overcome the difficult driving in the using smart traffic lights.

A little outside Montreal is the city of Brossard. A trial project is currently underway where a traffic light has been installed along the road by a school in a residential area.

Turns green if you drive slowly enough

But the traffic light is not quite like other traffic lights – the traffic light is red first, before a radar checks the speed of the approaching car. If it is too high, the light will remain red so the driver will have to stop in front of the traffic lights. If, on the other hand, you turn on the speed limit on the section, you get a green light and can thus pass.

The installation is called FRED, which means “educational traffic light”, or approximately “educational traffic light”.

– Fines can be effective, but only afterwards. The beautiful thing about FRED is that we reward good behavior and it happens immediately. It does not record any private information; it simply detects the oncoming vehicle and measures its speed. So it’s a carrot instead of a whip, says Mayor Doreen Assaad on the site mass blog streets.

Average speed decreased

The traffic light therefore does not regulate traffic at a crossroads and only stands along the road. The only goal is to slow down in place.

And it proved its effectiveness: after a week of using this solution, the average speed in zone 30 fell from 40 km/h to 29 km/h.

The trial project is scheduled to last 90 days.
