Today, Friday March 3, the Whites and Reds will have a chance to increase their medal count at the 2023 Nordic World Ski Championships in Planica – they will start their supreme competition – ski jumping. 5-6 with Canada. place in the medal count. Thanks to our jumpers, however, we can return to 4th place, overtaking the American team with two medals – gold and bronze.
On Thursday March 2, only one set of medals was distributed at the world championships. The women’s 4×5 km relay was won by the Norwegian team consisting of Tiril Udnes Weng, Astrid Øyre Slind, Ingvild Flugstad Østberg and Anne Kjersti Kalvå. Second place was taken by the Germans and third by the Swedes. Polish women did not start.
Once a winter sports powerhouse Finland without any medals
Finnish runners can speak of a lot of bad luck. During the relay race, Finnish skier Eveliina Piippo fainted. As the 24-year-old skier changed with Krista Pärmäkoski between stage three and stage four, she collapsed on the snow from exhaustion. Piippo tried to get up several times, but she couldn’t do it herself. The medical staff helped her and put her on her feet.
The Finnish team finished fourth in the 4×5 km relay.
Finland has so far failed to win any medals at this year’s championships in Winter Olympics events, which include skiing, biathlon, freestyle, alpine skiing, snowboarding, ski jumping and the Nordic combined. Thus, Suomi set a historic anti-record. Some winter sports world championships are still in progress, but the chances of success for Finnish athletes are slim.
The Swedish relay team can also kick their asses – they buried their chances of winning world championship gold. The Swedes, in the absence of multi-medal Norwegian Therese Johaug in the team, which ended her career, seemed to be the favorites of the competition. Driven by Ebba Andersson and Jonna Sundling, they have won as many as eight medals in the last four races – three gold, three silver and two bronze. Meanwhile Andersson, who was winning the second stage of the skiathlon on the last steepest climb, fell and broke her post, allowing herself to be overtaken by the pressing Norwegian Slind and the German Katarina Hennig and losing the distance at the Before.
“I don’t know exactly what happened, but suddenly I was on my knees. I shouted “Shit!” I felt so strong. Yes, they quickly gave me a new stick, but it was 10 centimeters longer. The last stage of the race was difficult. I was just trying to minimize the damage from the fall
– Andersson explained to “Aftonbladet”.
Swede Frida Karlsson, who was racing in the third stage, complained about poorly prepared skis for the race:
“I thought everything was under control.” I felt I could catch my rivals, but the skis were too bad for me to keep up with the rest
Karlsson explained to NRK.
The leader of the Swedish cross-country ski team’s service team, Petter Myhlback, responded to Karlsson’s criticism.
“I think Frida was very tired and couldn’t run properly. With the girls, of course, you have to talk, but I’m sure the skis were not badly prepared. This is an important factor, but there are others too.
Myhlback said on Viaplay.
