To mark the 50th anniversary of Tolkien’s death, the British author is being honoured with a separate exhibition at Rome’s venerable Galleria Nazionale d’arte Moderna e Contemporanea. The show was commissioned by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

Last week, a Tolkien exhibition opened in Rome. The exhibition is organized by the Italian Ministry of Culture – and at the request of Prime Minister Georgia Meloni. But should governments organize art exhibitions?

Few authors have reached as many readers and had as wide an impact as JRR Tolkien. the Lord of the Rings is one of the most widely read books in the world, probably third only to the Bible and the Quran. Peter Jackson’s film adaptation is recognized as one of the most influential films of all time, as is Amazon’s adaptation of Tolkien’s universe into a television series. Power Rings broke several records.
