For the first time since the start of Vladimir Putin’s “special military operation” last year, the president met some of the country’s wealthiest people on Thursday.
There he told billionaires like Oleg Deripaska, Vladimir Potanin and Aleksey Mordashov that their job was not just to make money, but to build society. Companies should not hide money abroad, but invest it in Russia, he argued.
– I look forward to hearing your views on how to make economic development more dynamic and successful, so that it leads to a noticeable improvement in the quality of life of people across the country, Putin said after the meeting.
Putin says the “Western Sanctions War” hasn’t broken the country’s economy. On the contrary, the economy is doing quite well, he said, who also said that Western companies that did not leave Russia last year made a good choice.
– Those who remained in the country were more intelligent, he says.
The Russian economy has proven more resilient than many expected. Russia hopes the economy will grow this year, after a 2.1% decline in 2022.
Also in February, Putin urged the economic elite to invest more in Russia. Then he also said that ordinary Russians had no sympathy for them because they had lost expensive boats and properties as a result of the sanctions.
