Recognition of a Palestinian state: will Canada follow in the footsteps of Spain, Ireland and Norway?
Now that Spain, Ireland and Norway recognize a Palestinian state, will Canada do the same?

Historically, Canada’s position has always been that it would recognize a negotiated two-state solution that would allow for lasting peace.
However, this changed on May 10.
“Canada is ready to recognize the State of Palestine at the most favorable time for the establishment of lasting peace, not necessarily at the final stage of the process,” Global Affairs Canada now indicates.
This means that Israel’s agreement will not be necessary for Canada to recognize the State of Palestine, but that certain conditions will be met, including that Hamas no longer has control of it.
However, there are currently no plans to do so.
“In the end it will have to be done, but what we have proposed from the beginning and always is a two-state solution,” said Transport Minister Pablo Rodríguez. “What worries me today is the death of so many people, especially children.”
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly made no comment on the matter during this morning’s party meeting.
