On day two of the World Speed Skating Championships held in Heerenveen, the Netherlands, we met the medalists in the team race and 500 meters. On the Biało-Czerwoni, Damian Żurek presented himself best, being classified in eighth position.
Friday’s competition on the Dutch track started with a team competition, where there were many surprises. On the women’s side, the representatives of the Netherlands were heading for gold, but they were disqualified. Thus, it was the Canadians who became world champions, ahead of the teams from Japan and the United States. Biało-Czerwone finished the competition in sixth position, along with Karolina Bosiek, Magdalena Czyszczoń and Olga Kaczmarek. The same result was recorded by Mr. Marcin Bachanek, Artur Janicki and Szymon Palka. Here, the Dutch proved to be the best, overtaking second-placed Canada by just 0.17s. On the third step of the podium was Norway.
At the distance of 500 meters, Femke Kok became the world champion, winning with the result of 37.28 s. The Dutchman was second to Canada’s Vanessa Herzog by 0.05s. The podium was completed by another representative of the hosts – Jutta Leerdam. Unfortunately, Polish women did not play a key role in this competition. Iga Wojtasik took 22nd position (39.52s), and Martyna Baran (39.77s) closed the field. The men’s gold was won by Jordan Stolz of the United States (34.10s), who beat this year’s World Cup winner – Laurent Dubreuil. The Canadian had to settle for the silver medal. The lowest step of the podium was taken by the Japanese Wataru Morishige. A very good result was also recorded by Damian Żurek, who finished the race in eighth position (34.87 s). Piotr Michalski was 11th (35.00s), and Marek Kania (35.05s) was three points lower.
