England coach Wiegman after dashed Olympic hopes: – I don’t know what to say
England national team coach Sarina Wiegman was left disappointed after the dramatic end to the Nations League group stage. Britain’s Olympic chances increased in overtime.
The England women’s football team did their bit to beat Scotland 6-0, but a 4-0 Netherlands defeat by Belgium sent the orange-clad attackers into the Olympic dance at the expense of England.
– I am of course very disappointed. This is the feeling I sit with now. When Lucy (Bronze) scored the sixth goal, I told my players we were going to do it. I don’t really know what to say. “That’s how close we were,” Wiegman told reporters shortly after the Scotland game.
The Olympic fiasco is a big setback for Wiegman. The England coach should have led Great Britain to the Paris Games if there had been a ticket there. Instead, she saw her own country rob her of this opportunity.
– We delivered the goods this evening and we delivered the goods during this December collection. The team showed great character. We really thought we would make it, but we didn’t. That’s football. I am very proud of the team, continued the England coach.
The Netherlands, France, Germany and Spain will participate in the Nations League final play-offs. The French women are already ready for the Olympics on home soil, meaning two of the remaining three group winners secure a place at the Games.
