Belinda Bencic is not going to conquer Miami (WTA 1000). The Swiss tennis player lost to Yekaterina Aleksandrova. In the clash, Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic was broken by Marketa Vondrousova.

In January and February, Belinda Bencic (WTA 9) won the titles in Adelaide and Abu Dhabi. Switzerland has done worse lately. In Doha, she reached the quarter-finals, but she lost the match with Iga Świątek. In Dubai and Indian Wells, the Olympic champion won one game in total. Miami’s tournament got off to a promising start as they crushed 6:1, 6:1 Leylah Fernandez. However, the next rival turned out to be too strong for her. On Sunday, Bencic lost 6-7(8), 3-6 to Yekaterina Aleksandrova (WTA 18).

In the first set, Bencic went from 2-4 to 5-4 and then wasted two set points. There was a tie-break in which the Swiss squandered the 5-2 lead. She also had two other set points (at 6-5 and 7-6). Aleksandrowa only had one chance to end the set. There was a break in the second set. Bencic fired the app in Game 2 and only made up for the loss at the end.

In a match that lasted one hour and 55 minutes, Aleksandrova served eight aces and scored 34 of 48 points on her first serve. She canceled three of four break points and turned two of nine chances into breaks. She tied the match record with Bencic at 3-3.

Karolina Pliskova (WTA 17) lost 1-6, 2-6 to Marketa Vondrousova (WTA 103). The match only lasted 52 minutes. The former leader of the classification scored only 28 points out of 83 (33.7%). Vondrousova saved four of her six break points and converted six of her eight break points.

It was the Czechs’ fourth meeting. In the previous three, Pliskova did not give her compatriot a set. They met for the second time in 2024. In Dubai, the former leader of the table won 6-3, 6-4. The two Czechs had their best start in Miami in 2019. Pliskova then reached the final and Vondrousova reached the quarter-finals. They met in the semi-finals. The first of them won 6:3, 6:4.

The next rival of the 2019 Roland Garros finalist and Tokyo Olympic silver medalist will be Sorana Cirstea (WTA 74). The Romanian came from 3:5 down in the first set and beat Karolina Muchova 7:5, 6:1 (WTA 55). The meeting lasted 91 minutes. Cirstea converted five of her eight break points.

Bianca Andreescu (WTA 31) won 6-4, 6-4 against Sofia Kenin (WTA 164). The Canadian served seven aces. She had three break points and used them all. It was a clash of tennis players who have a Grand Slam title in their achievements. Andreescu won the 2019 US Open and Kenin triumphed at the 2020 Australian Open. The Canadian’s next rival will be Aleksandrova.
